I have to admit, I am a Hidden Valley Ranch kinda girl.
I love slathering my veggies with it’s yumminess.
Have you been to the store and bought some lately?
They are getting a little expensive,
so I have been experimenting with some homemade versions.
Sounds like a easy enough task, right?
Wrong!
I want something that has the same some-what thick consistency
and yummy taste as my Hidden Valley Ranch.
After a lot of searching online, trial and error,
I think I finally have it,
or at least something that is close enough for my taste buds.
I took it to work earlier this week and everyone really liked it.
I even have several people that want to buy the mix from me!
1/2 cup powdered Buttermilk
3 tablespoons dried Parsley
1 tablespoon dried Dill Weed
1 tablespoon Onion Powder
1 tablespoon Salt
1 1/2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
3/4 teaspoons Pepper
Combine in a food processor and blend into a powdery consistency.
Store in a container of choice.
To make ranch dressing:
Combine 1 tablespoon mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1/2 cup milk.
Mix with wire whisk. Store in refrigerator until ready to use.
To make a ranch dip:
Combine 2 tablespoons mix with 1 cup sour cream.
Mix with wire whisk. Store in refrigerator until ready to use.
I do recommend making the dressing up several hours or a day ahead, so that all the flavors have a chance to blend together. Also, if you want a thicker or thinner dressing just adjust the amount of milk that you add in. Feel free to substitute yogurt, homemade mayo, or sour cream for the mayonnaise. You can also substitute soy milk or a different milk substitute for the milk.
I also wanted to mention something about the salt. Depending on what salt you use, it will change the flavor of the mix. If you use regular table salt, it gives it a more of a dill flavor, if you use sea salt it gives you a saltier taste. I like it both ways.
(Most of the girls at work liked the sea salt, The Husband liked it with table salt.)

No way to Pin? Pooh!
Searching and searching your Pin board, but can’t find it there. Guess I gotta cut ‘n paste.
So sorry!! I have been trying to figure out how to add a pin button. I promise I will have one up soon!
~Robyn
I use half mayo and half sour cream. I also add dried chives to the blend. Can’t wait to try this recipe out.
That sounds good. One of the girls at my work made it with just mayo for a dip. Yum. Thanks for stopping by! ~Robyn
Use 1-2 tablespoons to season your homemade vegetable soup….delicious.
I will have to try that! Thanks!
This recipe is a keeper. I tried it today, it was excellent. Thank you.
I am so happy you liked it!

I want to use this in place of the dry packets, avoiding the MSG. This looks like enough to equal 2 of those packets. Would you agree?
Krista,
One batch equals about 6 packages! I hope that helps.
~Robyn
Hi Krista! The recipe equals several of the dry packages. I am at work right now, but when I get home I will look and see how many it equals for sure. It sure cost a lot less to make it yourself! I think I figured my cost to be around .25 to .30 cents per 2 tablespoons! Plus, like you said, no MSG. ~Robyn
Thanks!
Oh, boy! Am I happy to find the Homemade Ranch Dressing recipe! I haven’t seen anyone mention that the stuff in the store contains MSG. We haven’t bought or eaten ranch dressing in a very long time, and we really miss it. Thank you!
I am so happy you stopped by! I hope you like my recipe!
~Robyn
how much tbsp for call a package of ranch mix???
Hi! 2 tablespoons equals 1 package.
~Robyn
I just realized that this should have said 1 tablespoon equals 1 package!
love this, looks easy enough that i will be able to give it a go too!
I hope you like it! Thanks for stopping by, and for following my blog!

Sweet! I’ve never made homemade ranch before…can’t wait to try it! I bet it tastes great! Thank you for linking up to A Pinteresting Party
You are welcome! Thanks for coming over and checking my recipe out!
I was just curious, most of the other dry mix recipes use the same ingredients but they only use a teaspoon of each amount…I just wanted to make sure this was Tablespoon and not teaspoon…it just seems a little overpowering of the herbs. I need to find some sort of homemade dry mix to make today and just wanted your thoughts about the amounts T. or tsp.
Thank you so much.
Yes, it is a Tablespoon. This gives it a much better flavor! I originally tried one of those other recipes that only called for a teaspoon and we found them to be blah. But everyone has different taste buds. I like lots of flavor in my ranch dressing.
Make sure you use a food processor when you make up the dry mix. The ingredients won’t blend correctly if you don’t.
Thanks for stopping by! ~Robyn
I can’t wait to try this! I love the idea of having homemade packages of Ranch dressing! Pinned … Thank you for sharing
Thanks Jamie! I hope you like it!
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! Can hardly wait to try. Where would one find powdered buttermilk?
Its usually in the baking section by the instant powdered milk. I hope you are able to find it!
What kind of powdered buttermilk do you use ? the kind I have has to be refrigerated after opening an is not shelf stable .
Thanks for asking! I never noticed, but mine does say that too. Although, I have never kept it in the refrigerator! I haven’t had any problems with my dry mix not being refrigerated, but if you want to keep the dry mix in there, it should be fine. It may just harden up a bit.
This may also depend on where you live. I live on the pacific coast, and we don’t get very many hot days here. I would think that the humidity, of where you live, could play a roll into whether you should keep it refrigerated or not.

Made this today and it was delicious. I used kosher salt and I would say the dill was pretty prominent but still yummy. I added a tablespoon more mayo to thicken it up, and about a 1/2 tbsp more mix. It was great just like that, but then I went over the top and whisked in a pretty ripe avocado. Served it on a cobb salad for dinner. Daughter will be taking the left overs to dip carrots in for her lunch. She loved it! Thanks for the recipe!
Oooh! Adding it to an avocado sounds delicious! I will have to remember to try that! One of the things I love about this recipe is that you can add as little or as much of the mix as you want to suit your taste buds!
This looks awesome! I LOVE ranch dressing, but cut it out of my diet to be a little healthier. I found a recipe on Pinterest that uses Greek yogurt and milk instead of mayo or sour cream. One packet of the mix and 1 c. of Greek yogurt and then a little milk to get the consistency you want. Like using mayo, its WAY better after it has set in the fridge for a bit. It’s the only way I make it now!
I bet this would be great made with greek yogurt instead of mayo.
Just out of curiosity, a pre packaged dry packet has 3 tbsp, do I use just 1 because it has more bang per tbsp?
Yes, that would be correct. The one thing I like about this recipe is that you can adjust it to your preference. Some people like it made with more of the seasoning mix, while other’s like it made with less!
Here is what I like: For dressing: 1 cup Mayo, 1 tablespoon mix, and 1/2 cup milk. For a ranch dip: 1 cup sour cream and 2 tablespoons mix.
Can you ever use it in things other than dressing like you can with the packets? Like roast potatoes. Chicken, pork chops, hamburgers?
Daniella, I use it just like I would packets. For those kinds of recipes I would use 2 Tablespoons of the mix

Thanks Andi!! I am so happy you like it and shared about it to your readers!
This is perfect. I’m too lazy to go to the store, but not too lazy to whip this up.
