Homemade Orange Cinnamon Rolls

Nothing smells better in the early morning hours than fresh Homemade Orange Cinnamon Rolls baking in the oven and I have just the recipe for you.  The dough is made from scratch with a simple, yet tasty icing that is whipped up in mere seconds. These cinnamon rolls are sure to have your family and guest coming back for more!  These are perfect to make for holiday breakfasts, after dinner treats with your favorite coffee, or a special treat in your child’s lunchbox as a surprise.  

Homemade Orange Cinnamon Rolls



4 Cups All Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar

2 Packets Dry Active Yeast

1 Teaspoon Salt

1 Cup Warm Milk

¼ Cup Orange Juice

1/3 Cup Unsalted Butter (softened)

1 Large Egg


1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter Softened

½ Cup Packed Light Brown Sugar

¼ Cup Granulated Sugar

1 Tablespoon Cinnamon

Zest of 1 Orange


1 Cup Powdered Sugar

½ Cup Orange Juice

¼ Cup Heavy Whipping Cream


  • In a large bowl, mix 2 cups flour, sugar, yeast and salt together until well blended.

  • Add warm milk, butter and egg. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute.

  • Mix in orange juice.  

  • Stir in remaining flour in ½ cup increments just until dough forms and is easy to handle.

  • Lightly dust a clean surface with flour and place dough in center.  Knead dough for 4-5 minutes turning ¼ turn each time to ensure all dough is kneaded well.  

  • Dough should be smooth and elastic when ready.

  • Place in greased bowl and turn grease side up.  

  • Cover lightly with plastic wrap and allow to rise in warm place for 1 hour to 1 ½ hours or until dough is doubled in size and an indentation is made when pressed with a finger.

  • When dough has risen, place on clean lightly floured surface and roll into a rectangular shape.  

  • Spread butter lightly across dough until all areas have been covered well.

  • Sprinkle with brown sugar, granulated sugar and cinnamon mixture until well coated.

  • Roll into a tube.  

  • Cut into 1” pieces and place on greased baking sheet or casserole dish.

  • Allow to rise to double size (approximately 30 minutes).

  • Bake at 350 degrees for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown.

  • In small bowl mix together powdered sugar, orange juice and whipping cream until smooth.  Pour over warm cinnamon rolls and serve.

These do take a bit of time to prepare but they are worth every minute for the light, fluffy and decadent flavors of an orange cinnamon roll.  These homemade orange cinnamon rolls are sure to please everyone, and I know they will be happy you added them to your holiday baking list!
