How to Boil an Egg

How to Boil an Egg

Sometimes the simplest of kitchen tasks can be the hardest. Take boiling an egg.  When I was first married, I didn’t know how to boil an egg properly. It was always hit or miss when I was preparing them. Thankfully over the years I have learned how to boil an egg and we will go over the basics in today’s Kitchen Basics 101 post.

  • Place the eggs in a pot and cover them with COLD water.
  • Heat over high heat until the water begins to boil.
  • Allow the eggs to boil for two minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and cover with the pot’s lid.
  • Let the eggs sit in the hot water for another 10 minutes.
  • Drain the eggs and serve them warm OR add cold water to the pot along with a handful of ice cubes to allow them to cool.
  • Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Perfect hard-boiled eggs every time.

Yep, I’ve been using your method and I get perfect hard-boiled eggs every time! The most important step is to allow the eggs to sit in the hot water for sometime.

Hi there! I saw this post and had to comment! I tried to boil an egg in the microwave at work the other MONTH and I still haven’t heard the end of it! We have a small little breakroom at lunch and the microwave door BLEW open and there was a mini explosion and egg EVERY-WHERE. It was a disaster and soooooo embarrasing. So thanks for this post… perfect for people like me! ;) Great site too!

Hi Robyn, Thanks for linking up your “egg” technique. It seems every cook has their method. I put room temp eggs in cold water, bring to boil, then turn down heat and simmer for 8:30 minutes. Then cool in water/ice like you do. Thanks for linking up this new version for me. I’ll have to try it. Please come back to our #theWeekendSocial starting Thursday at 9:00 PM EST. Pinned your recipe!
