Kitchen Substitutions

So, you thought you read the recipe, but now you are cooking and you realize that you forgot something. Do you make another trip to the store or try and find a substitute? Try some of these common kitchen substitutions and maybe you won’t have to go out again!

Recipe Calls For Amount Substitution
Allspice 1 teaspoon ½ teaspoon cinnamon and ½ teaspoon
ground cloves
Baking Powder 1 teaspoon 1/3 teaspoon baking soda and 5/8 teaspoon
cream of tartar
Brown Sugar 1 cup 1 cup sugar plus 1 teaspoon molasses
Corn Syrup 1 cup 1 cup sugar and ¼ cup water or 1 cup honey
Heavy Cream 1 cup ¾ cup milk and 1/3 cup butter or margarine
(use only for cooking or baking)
Honey 1 cup 1 ¼ cup sugar and ¼ cup water
Ketchup 1 cup 1 cup tomato sauce, ½ cup sugar and
2 tablespoons vinegar
Mayonnaise 1 cup 1 cup sour cream or 1 cup cottage cheese
*For dressing*   (Pureed in a blender)
Milk (Sour milk) 1 cup 1 cup plain yogurt or 1 cup whole milk with
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 can Heat and stir 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons
evaporated milk, 1 cup of sugar and
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
until sugar is dissolved
Sour Cream 1 cup 1 cup yogurt or ¾ cup milk, 3/4 teaspoon
lemon juice and ½ cup butter
Yogurt, plain 1 cup 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup cottage cheeseblended until smooth, or 1 cup sour cream

    I always forget to add sugar to my simple muffin recipe. Because it’s so simple I multi-task, and I get distracted & always forget to add the sugar. Thanks so much for sharing your Kitchen Substitutions List. I’m keeping this handy, I can always use this. Pinning/sharing this weekend.
